Saab is a Swedish car manufacturer formed in 1945 when Saab AB created a small car. Saab AB (Svenska Aeroplan AB) stands for the Swedish Aeroplane Corporation and is a Swedish aerospace and defence company. In 1949 the first Saab model, the Saab 92, was launched. Ten years later the best-selling Saab model, the Saab 900 was issued by Saab AB and Scania-Vabis.
The relatively early years of Saab were rather succesfull with the millionth example being sold in 1976. A cooperation with Fiat led to the creation of the Saab 600 and later the luxury model the Saab 9000 which is rather similar to cars such as the Alfa Romeo 164, the Fiat Croma or the Lancia Thema.
In 1989 the independent Saab Automobile AB was created. The American General Motors owned 50% of the new company though. That later extended to 100% when GM used its option to acquire the rest of Saab Automobile AB in 2000. Saab's 50th anniversary was marked by the launch of the Saab 9-5. The latter was the first Saab model without a coupe body style in 20 years.
The first 10 years of the 2000s were marked by financial difficulties for Saab however. These were eventually solved in the sense that Nevs bought a bankrupt Saab and produced the first Saab 9-3 in 2012.
